South Sudan: A breath of life

Sky News, the Australian news channel, used ProHD cameras on a recent shoot, South Sudan: A Breath of Life, covering some of the work of the humanitarian aid organisation, Medecins Sans Frontieres, in Sudan.D

Sudan is the biggest country in Africa but one of the poorest and one of the most fractured. The story covered hospitals across southern Sudan where infant and maternal mortality rates are some of the worst in the world. Malaria, meningitis and cholera thrive, children die from malnutrition, and only the most dedicated aid workers are willing to risk their health and their safety to serve in the country for months at a time.

The cameras to cover this worthwhile project were sold to Sky News by JVC dealer, Quinto Communications. Sky News were looking to upgrade to a quality camera that had a shoulder mount, SD/HD-SDI output, dual tape and Firestore record capabilities and the ability tointerchange lenses. The camera also had to be highly cost-effective.

Sky News purchased two GY-HD251 cameras kits that included Fujinon wideangled lenses, batteries, and Firestore camera-back HDD and then acquired a third kit as the project progressed. Ireland continued, “Sudan is a very difficult place to shoot in, so the cameras needed to be reliable and robust. Sky News used them for ENG fieldwork, tripod interviews and to record major events with many wide and shoulder mounted shots. I am delighted to report that the cameras performed very well and the image quality was exceptionally good especially in low light and the harsh conditions of Sudan.”

Against the toughest of backdrops, the Sky News team produced an excellent and hard-hitting piece. Ireland concluded, “It was a tough project for many of the reasons outlined but the ProHD cameras produced a continuously high quality image even in the most strenuous of conditions, such as being hoisted to the top of the water tower on a rope for a wide shot of the town.
